Drinks & Open Spaces
Enjoy your cocktail with a ciggy
Set in the gardens of the medieval Old Hospital de la Santa Creu, El Jardí is a rather unusual place for Barcelona, because it's a little green. Head here for some extra oxygen when it feels like the thousands of tourists have sucked it all up, acompanied by a cocktail. Sit in two's and three's on the narrow terrace that circumnavigates the alottment-esq garden , or find a table for bigger groups in the covered area. Peckish after all that fresh air? Try the prawns with lemon and tarragon, tuna tacos, mini burgers, bravas and the best olives in the world, Nocerella.

At first this eclectic space in the heart of Born draws you in with its colourful furniture and objects, however there is much much more to this place. Mescaldis is a social enterprise project by Fundació Ciutadania Multicultural that aims to aid social cohesian for immigrants and refugees. Through its Cuinant Oportunitats (cooking opporunities) programme Mescladis creates jobs and upskills those at risk of exclusion. In addition all the food, coffee and drinks follow the ethos of sustainability by using local and fair trade ingredients at great prices. Your beer and bravas order will go directly back into this worthy project, almost making that carb intake guilt free, right?

Much more than just a bar this secret garden looks like a stage set from Midsummer Night's Dream when lit at night, with birdcages hanging from a large oak tree. In fact it is indeed that, as the name might suggest, Antic Teatre has a programme of quirky plays, concerts and performances. The garden is a rare example of architecture from the Romantic peroid in Barcelona, and in the spirit of that era there is an atmosphere of creativity and community, and best of all a surprising lack of tourists considering it's close proximity to the Ramblas. Go for: cheap drinks, open space, great atmoshpere and perhaps a little drunken theatre. Closes relatively early, at 11, out of respect for the local residents.
